Bobby Tomlinson is one of our original Tarheel Tigers. He owns a 1965 GTO that he ordered and received in April of 1965. The frame off restoration is about 70% complete. At one point Bobby also owned a 1966 GTO that was his daily driver for about eleven years. He sold it in 2012 and his 1965 is his only current classic car.
Bobby is originally from Raleigh. Born and raised here, he’s never lived outside of the area. He is married to Sharon, his wife of 26 years. Combined, they have 4 children. Most of the kids live locally, with one in St. George, Utah. They are fortunate to have seven grandchildren that they can enjoy.
Bobby is retired from the City of Raleigh. He worked in the Finance Department and has been retired since 1997. He keeps very active, exercising three times a week at the gym. He also enjoys surf fishing. He likes to fish at Carolina Beach and Emerald Isle near the Coast Guard. Bobby recommends fishing at Hatteras and the Outer Banks during the off season. Since it’s something he clearly enjoys, if asked, he would likely share some tips to his success in fishing AND catching. His current home project is working in his yard plugging grass. It sounds like quite the workout in our tough piedmont soil. Sharon has been self-employed since 1996 and has her own workshop at home making window treatments.
If you have the opportunity to speak to Bobby, he doesn’t talk a lot about himself. He’s very low key. He also did some drag strip racing and took his class a few times. Bobby likely has more detailed stories that he would share about his times drag racing on Capital Boulevard. One of them involves losing his driver’s license for a year. He likely wouldn’t have been caught had he not touched the brakes.
